The resilience of democracy in times of polarization and populism

16.6.2025
Science and Technology Park, Podgorica

The Atlantic Council of Montenegro is organizing a roundtable titled The resilience of democracy in times of polarization and populism: from elections to civic participation, which will take place on June 16, 2025, starting at 11:00 AM at the Science and Technology Park Montenegro in Podgorica. This event is organized within the framework of a project supported by the National Endowment for Democracy, with the goal of enhancing citizen participation in political processes and encouraging the overcoming of political polarization in Montenegro.

In a world rapidly changing under the pressures of technology, economic market dynamics, and growing authoritarian tendencies, one key question arises: Can democracy keep pace with the demands of modern society, and how can we ensure it remains relevant and appealing in a time when societies are facing increasingly complex challenges and rapid change?

The panel discussion will address several themes, including electoral reform, strengthening institutional trust through transparency and accountability, the role of free and professional media in times of growing polarization and information manipulation, and civic participation.

The event will bring together representatives from institutions, the academic community, political parties, civil society, and the media, to collectively assess current challenges and identify innovative approaches to reinforce trust in democratic processes.

Following the panel discussion, we will open the dialogue for all participants who will have the opportunity to share their views, exchange opinions, and contribute to a deeper analysis of this important topic.
