Sharyl Cross
Dr. Sharyl Cross is the Director of the Kozmetsky Center at St. Edward’’s University and a lecturer in global politics at the Kennan Institute/Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. She was a professor and Academic Director of the Program for Advanced Security Studies and Advanced Course at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany (2005-2013) and held key leadership roles for Marshall Center initiatives in Russia, Eurasia, and Southeast Europe. Before her engagement at the Marshall Center, Dr. Cross was also a prominent professor of political science at the United States Air Force Academy.
She earned her doctorate in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and was a scholarship holder and consultant at the RAND Corporation. She has published numerous papers on topics such as Russian foreign policy, security relations between U.S./NATO and Russia, Sino-Russian relations, and security sector reforms in Southeast Europe. Her most recent book (co-authored with Paul J. Bolt) titled China, Russia, and Twenty-First Century Geopolitics,in collaboration with Oxford University Press, was published in 2018. Dr. Cross is currently one of the co-directors on a project about religion and international security, conducted in collaboration with NATO PDD, which involves cooperation with experts from Eurasia and Southeast Europe. Her maternal great-grandparents (from the Balić and Mitrovićfamilies) originated from Sveti Stefan in Montenegro and immigrated to the United States in 1905.
